Desert-Stonewall Democrats

May 2015 Meeting

Tuesday May 19th – 6:00 PM
Mizell Senior Center, Palm Springs

Join us for “Assault on Labor”
With a Panel of Union Activists

Labor unions are under attack in many states and membership is declining. In 2013 there were 14.5 million union members in the United States, compared with 17.7 million in 1983. In 2013, the percentage of workers belonging to a union in the US (or total labor union “density”) was 11.3%, compared to 20.1% in 1983. Overall declines continue
despite some growth in public sector union membership.

American unions, especially those in the public sector, remain a political factor, both through mobilization of their own memberships and through coalitions with like-minded activist organizations. But rising income inequality in the United States is directly attributable (by the IMF and others) to the decline of the labor movement and union membership

Union Chart

We will have an expert panel of union activists to update our members on the current state of labor unions and to discuss what the decline in membership means for their political influence and the public well-being.

This promises to be another informative session that you won’t want to miss!

A brief business meeting will follow the panel. Beverages and appetizers will be served.

I hope to see you there.
